This page is dedicated to any social communities who wants to know some useful information as part of a knowledge-based learning experience.
Why do we need to purchase a domain name and avoid “free” domains? Our domain name will be our blog’s address on the Internet, so it is crucial that we choose the right one. A domain gives public/social viewers a hint of what they will find at our site. If the domain name relates to our brand, it makes our site much easier to find.
That is why we MUST get our own unique domain name, like www.[YourName].com; (Like mine – darulfaaizin.com/wanharris) . If you get it free from a web hosting company, your domain name will includes the company’s name (e.g., www.SomeoneWebHost.com /yoursite ). I don’t encourage us to use “Free” domain unless our objective of creating a blog is just to create a platform to share our journal with our offline friends. The reasons to avoid “Free” domain and started with our own domain are:-
- Using our own domain name is easy to remember; Our readers always know how to get to our site.
- It can entice people surfing the Web to visit our site before someone else’s.
- We can easily move our site to another host while keeping our domain name.
- No web host company’s advertisement on our website.
- We can easily customize our look and web template at our wish.
1. Choose And Register A Domain Name
One of the first steps of designing and building a blog is choosing and registering a domain name like www.[Yourname].com. However, we have to check if our domain name is still available before we can register it. You can check by clicking here. If it is available, excellent!
2. Choose the Web Hosting Services Plan
There are many companies provide web hosting service. When we choose a web host provider, the service is always the key factor we should look at. I have done a lot internet research before I chose a domain host. The reason I choose BlueHost is because of their reliable service, they have great customer service available 24 hours a day. Their uptime is 99.9% and they have superfast connectivity and made my webpages loaded quickly. Secondly, their price is also cheap depending which plan you decide to choose.
In 2008, I signed up the BlueHost Basic Hosting plan for 2 years at about USD 160++ (USD6.95 per month). Today, the price still remains as same as it was in year 2008. However, they offer me more benefits such as more free apps and unlimited bandwidth and capacity!
